Teacher-Training Kids in Discipline and Creativity

While having lunch with me 4th grade daughter, I witnessed a teacher doing something out of the box. She had taught the kids to hold their fingers up to control the noise level-they were responsible for monitoring and quieting themselves down. She recently added spontaneous "stage time" to reward their good behavior. The last ten minutes of lunch, kids volunteered and got on stage performing skits, dances, singing or anything else their minds could create. It was amazing. These kids had practiced in teams of 2, 3 or even 7 on their own time, creating unique little skits in hopes of being chosen. Yet, the cafeteria must be respectful and quiet during these amateur performance or all stopped. I loved it. Thank you Ms. Carcaterra for inspiring creativity while keeping discipline!
