My OA Moment,
The Ultimate Compliment from an Old Friend

It was a Sunday morning in May. I was sitting in my home church with my mother, sisters, brother, in-laws, my own children and my precious 14 nieces and nephews. We were all in town visiting for the weekend. We were a sight no doubt. Taking up two pews. Our smiles were big because as always we were just so happy to be together in one place.  I was sitting there just enjoying being home, being with my family, when one of the church members, Lynn, approached the pulpit to make a standard announcement. I smiled remembering when Lynn and his wife were our youth counselors during our teenage years. I noticed him looking right at us as he took a breath. Then he said, “I must take a moment to honor the Hamelryck family. It is so good to have them all home again. They have been such a big part of our church for the last 40 years. It warms my heart and my soul breaks wide open when I see them.” We were being honored for just being ourselves and the obvious love and joy we had for each other and life. What made the honor even more touching was it was so unexpected for us and it was spontaneous and genuine from him.  It was an OA moment because my mom and all of us were being honored for all the laughs, for all the love and happiness we had shared with each other and many members of our home church. The gratitude just poured out of my soul. What a compliment, what an honor.
